This end-of-the-year event marks the end of our 3-yearlong studio and research cycle on the topic called ‘Inland-Seaward’. The cycle brought together perspectives from urban theories, critical media, and design to explore spatial concepts that can help us decipher the material processes of anthropogenic transformation across scales, and the possible social and ecological (re)organization of the coastal and terrestrial landscape continuum.
This end-of-the-year and cycle event combines the last session of our yearly lecture series ‘After Territory’ with an exhibition and review to reflect on the outcomes of this 3-yearlong study and the disciplinary/ cross-disciplinary findings of our 35 individual graduation projects. The collection of work presented in “Inland-Seaward: Monographs, Sequences” exhibition critically analyses the de- / re-territorialization of places, structures and cultures between land and sea: the palimpsest of traces of inhabitation, production, and infrastructure projected on land, river, and ocean grounds, which define the urban as a material and socio-ecological space. As guiding principle, the iterative notions of accumulation and clearance are at the core of the study. By looking into centres and repeated cycles of accumulation and their externalities, the studio documented urbanisation and its impact on present and future environment and life. The project continues in search for alternative forms of critical design as acts of care.

John Palmesino is an architect, co-founder with Ann-Sofi Rönnskog of Territorial Agency, a London-based independent organization that combines contemporary architecture, science, art, advocacy and action to promote comprehensive territorial transformations in the Anthropocene epoch.
Recent projects include ‘Oceans in Transformation’ commissioned by TBA21– Academy; ‘Sensible Zone’ at la Biennale di Venezia, Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, Barbican London, Warsaw Biennale, Waag; ‘Museum of Oil’ with Greenpeace, ZKM Reset Modernity and Chicago Architecture Biennial; ‘Anthropocene Observatory’ at HKW Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, BAK Utrecht and in the collection of Centraal Museum Utrecht.
John is a founding member of multiplicity, an international network of researchers on the contemporary inhabited territories.
John and Ann-Sofi teach at the AA Architectural Association.
Territorial Agency is the recipient of the STARTS Prize—Grand prize of the European Commission honouring innovation in technology, industry and society stimulated by the arts for Oceans in Transformation.

“The Thermodynamic Garden: On the Degradation of Energy in Hyper-Arid Environments”
Pablo Pérez-Ramos is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). He holds a Doctor of Design and Master of Landscape Architecture degrees from the Harvard GSD, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM). Pérez-Ramos investigates the origins of contemporary ecological perspectives in landscape architecture by examining the central debates in the intellectual history of ecological ideas. Pérez-Ramos’ most current research focuses on developing a thermodynamic theory of landscape architecture, which hopes to illuminate the interferences that exist between designed landscapes and the other forces that shape the environment. He has recently received grants from the Milton Fund and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard to research traditional knowledge and agricultural practices under conditions of extreme aridity in North Africa and Central America.
